MELBOURNE'S new rectangular football stadium will open with the traditional rugby league Test between Australia and world champions New Zealand in May.

The Victorian state government has announced the Olympic Park precinct venue will open with the Test on May 7, followed by the Melbourne Storm's first game there against Brisbane two days later.

"This festival of rugby league is a magnificent way to open our world-class stadium," Storm CEO Brian Waldron said in a statement.

"The ANZAC Day Test match is a massive game between two of the heavyweights of international rugby league, and it will be magnificent to then lock horns with the Broncos, our traditional foes, two days later for our very first game at our new home."

The Storm had planned to play their home games against Manly and the Warriors at the venue in April but have revised those arrangements.
